General Description of School

Bridgeport Hospital School of Nursing (BHSN) was opened in 1884. At that time, BHSN was one of only 15 nursing schools in the country and exists today as the oldest school of nursing in Connecticut and one of the oldest in the country. The first public graduation exercises were held in 1889 with 6 graduating students. Since its establishment, BHSN has graduated over 5000 nurses and is proud of its long tradition of excellence. BHSN continues to have full enrollments with waiting lists, consistent NCLEX-RN pass rates exceeding or equal to state and national rates and graduates recognized for their clinical strengths. Expectations for nursing students' education began to change in the twenty-first century. In 2010, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) issued a recommendation that the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree is the minimum degree that a nurse should possess. The American Nurses Association (ANA) moved the discussion to a new level by outlining the key messages from the IOM's report on the future of nursing. The aim of the future of nursing is to use evidence-based practice to advance the nursing profession so that nursing can keep pace with health-care reform activities. During 2012-2013, BHSN was focused on supporting this educational transformation to a level of higher learning with a partner institution. In support of this transformation, BHSN and the University of Bridgeport (UB) have been working collaboratively since March of 2014 to determine the process for transformation and signed an agreement in January 2015 outlining the full integration of the Bridgeport Hospital School of Nursing into a four-year program at the University of Bridgeport; a collaboration that strengthens the City of Bridgeport community and plans for a degree-granting program. As part of the closure plan, the last BHSN nursing diploma class was admitted in the fall of 2015. BHSN will continue to operate its nursing program until its last class graduates in May 2017. Nursing students in this admitted class who are successful in the program will complete their course of studies and graduate by May 2017. All requirements and standards shall be maintained until the last student is graduated from the RN Diploma program at BHSN. Essential student services: learning center, medical library, counseling, health and financial aid will be maintained and available for students until closure. The BHSN class of fall 2015 will have the option to remain in the traditional track and graduate May 2017 or at the end of their first year apply to the accelerated track and graduate December 2016, one semester earlier. Moving forward in support of the IOM recommendation, the University of Bridgeport School of Nursing (UBSN) is actively seeking approval for a traditional four year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree program and has already been approved for the RN to BSN Hybrid Completion Program. The first UBSN class of the RN to BSN Hybrid Completion Program was admitted fall 2015.
